Sir William Hamilton, FRS, FSA. Marble Bust. c1797. Untraced’  perhaps unfinished. On 10 June 1797 Robert Fagan wrote that ‘Hewetson is at Naples doing Sir William and Lady’s busts’ (T. W. I. Hodgkinson, 'Christopher Hewetson, an Irish Sculptor in Rome', Wal. Soc., XXXIV, 1958, p 53) 

These are busts untraced - possibly sunk in the wreck of the Colossus in 1798 off the Scilly Isles altho' not listed in an inventory of antiquites etc from Naples belonging Hamilton (info de Breffney).

The bust of Gavin Hamilton by Hewetson was in his personal collection.

The 1798  Inventory of the contents of Hewetson's Studio.

A list the busts remaining in the Hewetson Studio when he died.

Some of these busts were later completed by his longtime assistant Cristoforo Prosperi.

The inventory was compiled under the supervision of two contemporary sculptors and restorers Vincenzo Pacetti (1746 - 1820)  and Carlo Albacini (1752 - 1783).

Some notes.

Other Hickman Windsor styled Lord Windsor until 1771 when he became the 5th Earl of Plymouth.

The Fourth Earl had died in 1771.

Other Windsor (4th Earl,of Plymouth and his wife Elizabeth's only son and heir, Other Lewis Windsor, 4th earl (1731-71) was succeeded by his son Other Hickman, 5th earl (1751-1799), who was succeeded by his only son and heir, Other Archer Windsor, 6th earl (1789-1833, dsp.), on whose death the barony of Windsor de Stanwell fell into abeyance. 

The Rev. Andrews Windsor (1754-1837, dsp.) succeeded as 7th earl, being a younger brother of the 4th earl, and he was succeeded by his brother Henry Windsor, 8th earl (1768-1843, dsp.)on whose death the earldom became extinct.

A Portrait of Bartolomeo Cavaceppi (1715/16 - 1799).

by Anton von Maron (1733 - 1808).


A pupil of Mengs (see Hewetson busts of Anton Raphael Mengs - assitant to Mengs he married Meng's sister).

The most important restorer of Antiquities in Rome in the mid late 18th century.

His fame was firmly established between 1768 and 1772, when he published three volumes of engraved images of works he had restored or possessed, the Raccolta d'Antiche statue, Busti, Teste Cognite.

The portrait included here for good measure.

I suspect that Heweton had close ties with Cavaceppi at the beginning of his sojourn in Rome.




Note.

The use of the eared socle based on classical prototypes, on 18th century portrait busts was popularised by Cavaceppi and used frequently on Hewtson's busts.

A Bust ascribed to Hewetson but I am doubtful.

I think this is a fabulous bust but I am slightly doubtful of the attribution.

They say it has an Irish provenance.

The bust feels more French to me and it perhaps resembles the work of Defernex.

The use of the twin props at the back needs researching

I am assuming that the socle is a modern substitute.

The truncation and raking at the base is puzzling.

Some brief notes on Thomas Mansell Talbot

Thomas Mansel Talbotwent on the Grand Tour from 1770 to 1775 and commissioned this bust of himself at a cost of £68 - a fairly standard charge - from the Irish sculptor Christopher Hewetson. At the same time he commissioned a bust of Pope Clement XIV (Museum no. A.22-1948). for £140.

Talbot paid Hewetson £68 for the marble. It was supplied with three plaster casts and its mould.

Talbot had spent a year in Geneva before travelling to Turin where he stayed between August 1769 and March 1770. He travelled south in October of 1769 to Florence with Peter King, Richard Malone and a Mr Leighton - on the 15 May he was in Venice

From 30 November 1771 until June 1772 he was in Rome He was back in England by August 1772

In the course of his visits he was encouraged by Charles Townley to purchase works of art for Penrice on a grand scale.

He had "money enough to supply a total want of Judgements" thought Mrs Home - her husband described him as"£7,000 a year in Wales, awkward half bred Dutchess of Beaufort fond"

Twenty three cases of pictures and marbles were shipped on the Eagle from Leghorn (Livorno) to Wales in June 1775. and Talbots Italian notebook records £7397 spent on  pictures copies sculptures drawings plans models books and chimneypieces? 

Talbot used as his agents Thomas Jenkins (an undated  payment of £4140 is recorded) and Gavin Hamilton (Hewetson sculpted a bust of Hamilton)

In 1772 he sat for a miniature portrait to Marsigliand he commissioned a painting for 260 guineas from Mengs (also portrayed by Hewetson).


He bought the Abbe Dolce's entire collection in 1773 and commisioned copies from Cardelli.

He commissioned Diomede from JT Sergel in the same year (there is a version in the National Museum Stockholm.
















































The treatment of the eyes should be compared with the anonymous Ashmolean marble busts

The bust is unusual in that it shows a man with his own hair worn long.

The bust of Luigi Gonzaga di Castigleone also by Hewetson of 1776, now in the Museo di Roma, Palazzo Braschi and formerly in the Roman Academy known as Arcadia shows a similar hairstyle, now generally called a mullet.

When John Byng (later Viscount Torrington) visited Margam Abbey in 1787 he was very critical of the general ruin & neglect of the property. 

Impressed by the Chapter House, Byng observed that “probably Mr T., travell’d gentleman, knows not of, or esteems this treasue; but puts more store by some (unpack’d) boxes of statues, (as the maid call’d them) he has brought from Italy – this is one of the advantages of travel, to come home with a vamp’d Corregio and some shabby marbles and then neglect the real antiqities and old pictures at your family seat!”
