Anonymous but probably by William Scouler (1796 - 1854)
Works in plaster before 1825: The antiquary and author, John
Britton, engaged Scoular in late 1817 to make reduced models in plaster, height
18 ins, from monumental busts of Camden and Ben Jonson in Westminster Abbey and
of Shakespeare at Stratford; these busts were each fixed to a pedestal in the
form of three books and finished with a thin wash of stone colour paint
(prospectus, copy in British Library, 1879.b.1, Dawson Turner collection,
vol.1, item 320; see also The Sun 17 August 1818).
A bust of Burns, from a
portrait by A. Nasmyth, was marketed by Britton in 1820, when it was also
advertised that one of Dr Johnson was in preparation (prospectus, Dawson Turner
collection, vol.3, item 204, dated 1820 in pencil). Scoular produced a bust of
Britton, which he exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1819 (engraved as a
medallion portrait in 1826, British Museum, 1876,1209.75).
