 Palmer, 118 St Martin's Lane, on the North Corner of Hemmings Row.

First mentioned as a supplier of Coloured Glass to Horace Walpole in 1747.


Horace Walpole bought the four-acre estate of Strawberry Hill between Twickenham and Richmond in 1747. Thereafter he radically enlarged both the existing house and grounds, remodelling the former into a gothic fantasy castle. Part of the interior decoration saw the purchase and installation of hundreds of panels of displaced stained glass, much of it from the Low Countries. 

For the first phase of work (1750–1754) Walpole used Mr (George) Palmer, of St Martin’s Lane, to set the panels in plain deeply coloured glass, which showed off the pale roundels to great effect.

William Henry Hunt (1790 - 1864).

In 1806 Hunt persuaded his father to allow him to train as an artist, becoming apprenticed for a term of seven years to John Varley, the watercolourist, drawing master, astrologer, and a close friend of William Blake. Hunt exhibited three oil paintings at the Royal Academy in 1807 and continued to exhibit there for several years following. In 1808 he was admitted as a student to the Royal Academy Schools.


Hunt's uncle, a butcher, is recorded as having said of the artist, "He was always a poor cripple, and as he was fit for nothing, they made an artist of him." 

Hunt had deformed legs that hampered his movement and may well have contributed to his eventual abandonment of landscape work in favor of still life and figures

For the study of the Mews this is a very important drawing So far this is the only illustration of any of the buildings within the Kings Mews except for Kent's rebuilding of the North range of 1732/3.

The resolution is slightly higher.

I will attempt to get a copy of the original in due course.






This image depicts the long barn which occupied almost the whole of the East side of the Great Mews.

Hopefully a better image will appear in due course.

Lot 43, A sitting figure by Scheemakers.

Possibly the V and A terracotta.

Height 41.9 cms

This is the model for an allegorical figure on the monument to the 2nd Lord Raymond (d. 1756) in the church of St Lawrence, Abbots Langley, Hertfordshire.

Provenance -

Bought Christie's, London, 11 December 1984, lot no. 20, sold to Cyril Humphris for £432. Purchased for £1000 from Cyril Humphris, London, 1985.












Lot 79 Marble Bust of Pope after Roubiliac
and a Marble Bust of Lawrence Sterne.

Perhaps those now at the Metropolitan Museum, New York.

This pair are unrecorded before 1937, when they belonged to Lord Hore-Belisha, minister of war in the Chamberlain cabinet.

Another pair of these Nollekens busts of Pope and Sterne were sold by Mealley's Auctioneers in Ireland. Lot 487. 28 March. 2000.
